How to Check for Updates on a Windows 11 Device

Purpose

Keeping your Windows 11 device updated helps protect it from security threats, improves performance, and ensures you receive the latest fixes and features.

This article explains how to check for and install Windows updates on a Windows 11 device.


Before You Start

Please make sure you have:

  • A stable internet connection

  • Your device plugged in (recommended)

  • Enough time for updates (some updates take 10–60 minutes)


Option 1 (Recommended): Check for Updates Using Settings

  1. Click the Start Menu (Windows icon).

  2. Select Settings (gear icon).

    • Shortcut: Press Windows + I

  3. In the left menu, click Windows Update.

  4. Click Check for updates.

  5. If updates are available:

    • Click Download & install (if prompted)

    • Wait for the update process to complete

  6. If prompted, click Restart now to finish installation.

✅ Your device is now updated.


Option 2: Install Updates During a Restart

Some updates will not complete until the device restarts.

To restart and install updates:

  1. Click the Start Menu

  2. Click the Power button

  3. Select Update and restart (if available)

📌 If you only see Restart, your device may not have pending updates.

 


⚠️ Important Notes

  • Updates may take longer depending on device model and internet speed.

  • Do not turn off your device during update installation.
